Principal's Message

Welcome To Sutton Elementary School!

Sutton Elementary School is located at 3100 E. Memorial Drive in Muncie, Indiana. Sutton is part of the Muncie Community Schools Corporation (MCS). Muncie is located in East Central Indiana and has a population of approximately 70,100.

The current Sutton School facility was constructed in two phases. The original building opened in December 1951 and was built to relieve overcrowding in two neighboring schools, Blaine and Stevenson. Located on a plot of 10 1/2 acres, the L-shaped, one-story, 15 room building presented many of the latest ideas in elementary school building design. Upon closing Blaine Elementary School at the end of the1976-77 school year, a new open-concept structure was joined with the original Sutton building. This facility was dedicated in the fall of 1977 and added 14 additional classrooms, a media center, and art and music rooms to the 1951 structure. Since that time many walls have been added in the "open" areas.

Sutton serves a diverse, socioeconomic population.  A certified staff of 27 serves the 355 Sutton students. This group consists of one principal, 16 classroom teachers in grades K-5, one data coach, three instructional assistants working with students at all grade levels, one resource teacher, one speech/language pathologist, one counselor, one art teacher, one music teacher, one physical education teacher, one half-time library/media specialist, one registered nurse, one administrative assistant and one student assistance coordinator. Additionally, one secretary, one building instructional assistant, three custodians and three cafeteria personnel support students.

Sutton Elementary follows the 8-step model for continuous improvement in academics and Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) for behavior.  The staff continues to offer quality academic curriculum and instruction based on current research. Curriculum and instruction at Sutton Elementary School is based on the Indiana Academic College and Career Ready Standards and curriculum maps. These curriculum maps and standards are available to patrons in the school library, google drive, school office, and online at Curriculum Mapper. State maps are also referenced at the IDOE website.  All Sutton students receive Title I services. Title I funding, allows us to provide a data coach, a school counselor, and a half-time media specialist. In order to better meet the needs of the students, three instructional assistants have been added to enhance classroom instruction in the areas of reading and math.  The Sutton staff consistently attempts to provide academic stability and social/emotional support for all students.

Sutton offers many extracurricular activities for students such as Sports, Choir, Student Council, Jump Rope for Heart, Garden Club, Reading Club, Pokemon Club, Safety Patrol, AOK tutoring program, and Art Club.

Sutton Elementary has developed strong community partnerships to meet the needs of our students and families. The strongest of these partnerships lie with Glad Tidings Church. This partnership offers financial assistance to the school and families, mentoring programs, PBIS incentives, and various volunteering opportunities. Other community partners include Second Harvest Food Bank, Muncie Public Library, Open Door, United Way, Ball State University, Muncie Black Expo, Blaine-Southeast Neighborhood Association, Back to School Teacher Store, Prime Trust Bank, Head Start, and Better Way.
